Starting Your Tomato Seeds in Peat Pots

Starting Your Tomato Seeds in Peat Pots

Jump Starter

If you want to get a jump on the tomato growing season, starting your tomato seeds in peat pots is the best way to go. There are several advantages to this. First, you have an unlimited selection of varieties, whereas, you are limited to what plants the garden center has to offer. Second, you get to control every aspect of your tomato plant's growth, from planting, watering, feeding, heat and light. Finally, by starting your tomato seeds in peat pots, you don't have to repot one or two times into larger pots and then transplant into the garden. You can plant your peat pot directly in the garden.

About six to eight weeks before the last frost of the spring, get your peat pots ready. Use pots that are three or four inches deep. Use a soil-less starting mix that has no soil borne diseases, weed seeds or even nutrients in them. You will also need a water bottle with a sprayer, liquid fertilizer, a heat source and a light source.

Moisten the starting mix in the bag, this stuff is light and airy and will fly around everywhere. Fill your peat pots to a quarter to a half inch from the top of the pot. Place two or three tomato seeds a half an inch apart in the middle of each pot and cover with a quarter inch of the starting mix. Gently firm the mix making sure there is good contact between the seed and the mix. Use the spray bottle to mist the seeds, do not disturb the seeds with a blast of water.

You can cover your pots with plastic wrap to keep the moisture consistent during germination, just keep an eye on them to ensure they don't dry out. Place the pots on top of a refrigerator, a water heater or a heating pad to keep the heat at around seventy to eighty degrees F until they germinate.

In around six to eight days, stems and seed leaves should emerge through the surface, when this happens, remove the plastic wrap and move them to a light source. Some options are a sunny window sill, a sunny room or a fluorescent lamp. Don't get alarmed when the first leaves (seed leaves) turn brown, shrivel up and drop off, that's what seed leaves do. The next set of leaves to appear are the plant's true leaves. When the true leaves appear it is time to start a weekly feeding with liquid fertilizer. Just dilute the liquid fertilizer to half its recommended strength and use it once a week.

Keep your new seedlings under light. With a fluorescent light try to keep the light a couple of inches above the plants, and adjust the light as they grow. You can even leave the lights on all the time, but at least fourteen to sixteen hours a day.

When your seedlings get about two inches tall, pick out the healthiest plant and snip the others off at the surface, do not pull them out of the pot, you could disturb the roots of the remaining plant. Keep the soil moist, the plants fed once a week and keep them under light.

About one or two weeks before you transplant your seedlings into the garden, start taking them outside to a shady area for increasing amounts of time each day. This will help them adjust to the conditions outside, a process known as hardening off.

When the soil temperature reaches fifty-five to sixty degrees F and the day and night temperatures stay above fifty degrees F, it is time to plant them in the garden.

Just dig your hole and place the entire peat pot into the ground deep enough to cover the pot completely. The pot will decompose in the soil and roots can penetrate it like it was not even there.

Starting the Right Business

Starting the Right Business

Jump Starter

More now than ever before it is becoming the desire of a majority of people to start and succeed in their own business. People are tired of working for someone else and having their dreams deferred while life passes them by. If you are one of the millions thinking about a business to start, I need to ask you a very important question:

What wakes you up in the morning and keeps you up at night?

It is the answer to this question that will lead you to the business that you should start. Your success in life and business depends on the passion you have for what you accomplish everyday.

Before you begin your business venture ask yourself three very important questions?

o What things in life excite me?

o What would make me work through the struggles and accept the risks that could end in failure?

o What sends chills down my spine when I think of doing it well?

If you don't build a business in an area where passion and excitement motivate you everyday, you will ultimately become bored with your business and it will fail. Now understand that when I say fail I don't necessarily mean you will close the doors and turn out the lights. Your business may indeed continue to provide you with income, but it will fail you because your life will loose meaning as you become a slave to a business that bores you!

This is why I struggle so with most pre-packaged online business ventures. They offer you the opportunity for making a lot of money. However money is not all that it is cracked up to be if there is nothing but money to be had in your life. (Otherwise there are some very unique not to mention illegal ways to make lots of money quickly!) In networking as well as franchising and other businesses where you buy into someone else's dream, you either love it forever or it looses its luster rather quickly. That is why even the best of these internet entrepreneurs generally move from company to company looking for the thing that excites them for the time being.

I prefer finding out what really turns my crank and going after it. My dream is the one that wakes me up in the morning and keeps me up at night. Your dream is what will do that for you as well.

So ... before you jump into something that you will hate worse than your job, take some time and answer this question for yourself. When you come up with the answer that is best for you, you will know it. You will not be able to turn from it. It will eat at you and take up valuable time in your day. At that point you can begin the research process that will lead you to creating a value that you can offer to others who have the same interests as you.

Tips to Maintain Your Car Battery and Jump Starting Your Car

Tips to Maintain Your Car Battery and Jump Starting Your Car

Jump Starter

It is very important to understand how your car works. The car battery is very important, as without it, your car cannot start. Many things in your car like the clock, mobile charger and radio, work with the help of your energy box even when your car is turned off. No battery can last forever; however, proper maintenance can give it an extended life.

Every car has its battery placed under the hood and is easy to spot it. Most car energy cells are large with either rectangular or square shaped boxes connected with two cables. These cables should be kept clean and corrosion free. If you spot small crystals or white powder on them make sure you clean them immediately with the help of a wire brush.

Generally a battery which is a12 volt type will be made up of two 6 volt cells having positively and negatively charged lead plates and separators that are insulated. The solution inside the cell is an electrolyte which consists of two thirds distilled water and 1 third sulphuric acid. The electrolyte solution and the lead plates interact to produce a chemical energy, which in turn is converted into electric energy to produce electricity for your car.

When handling a batteries one should be very careful and should use proper covering and clothing, gloves and goggles. A torch should be used instead of a match when working near the battery, switch off all possible electric appliances. Your car battery is likely to produce gases which are highly explosive.

Depending on your driving ways and maintenance of your car battery, generally a car battery is replaced with a new one after every three to five years. The way you start and stop the car engine or the climatic changes also play a very important factor to determine the life span of your car battery.

When your car is facing a starting problem, your car may need jump starting. Jumper cables are attached to a working battery and then to your car battery. The positive cable should be attached to the positive terminal of the dead energy box and then to the positive terminal of the working car battery. Now, the negative end should be attached to the negative terminal of the working car battery and the other end to a metallic part of your car engine. Make sure you do not attach the negative end of the cable to your dead battery under any circumstances. Now you can start your car engine with the help of the working energy cell. Let the engine idle for a while until you switch on the headlights of your car with your energy cell. When you turn on the lights of your car you can save the car computer from any voltage fluctuation or sparks. Once you have done all this, you can start your car with the help of your dead battery and remove all cables in reverse order. Make sure the clamps do not touch each other when removing them.

Learning simple methods to take care of your batteries will save you from problems and will ensure your car battery has a longer life.

Some of the better commercial soil mixes on the market today include Redi-Earth, Jiffy Mix, Pro-Mix. Check more out on your own if you can't get your hands of these names.

Another option you may have is to make your own soil mix by "lightening" it with sand or peat moss. To make one of the best soil mixes today blend together four quarts of vermiculite or perlite, four quarts of shredded peat moss or sphagnum, two level tablespoons of ground limestone, and four level tablespoons of 5-10-10 fertilizer.

If you are an avid gardener like I am, you need more soil than the above formula gives you. To make a larger batch of soil, mix two bales of peat moss, three four-cubic-foot bags of vermiculite, six pounds 5-10-10 fertilizer, two pounds superphosphate, and five pounds agricultural lime. To mix this, shovel roughly mixed ingredients from one cone-shaped pile to another, adding each shovelful to top of the pile and allowing the soil to tumble down the sides of the cone. This is how the greenhouses here in Canada make their soil mixtures for their bedding plants.

If you're like me and don't really want to measure and fool around with this stuff - it's time consuming; simply mix one part loam, one part clean sand or perlite, and one part leaf mold or moist peat. This is the one that I use and it ensures that I can make as much as I want based on how big I make my parts.

You hear a lot about sterilizing soil, but have you ever tried to do this? Let's face it, as with sterilization in everything, sterilizing soil kills off weed seeds and potentially harmful disease organisms, but it is a messy job. Large quantities of soil can be fumigated with methyl bromide, chloropicrin, and other similar chemicals. Just follow the manufacturer's directions on the label.

When I do sterilize soil, I usually put the soil in a shallow tray (I found an old roaster and use this roaster exclusively for this purpose) and bake at 350F., for about 1 ½ hours. It stinks though. Some containers that are less shallow may take less time. In order to test the soil, place a potato in the soil; when it is done, the soil is ready. Remember you are not cooking your dirt, you are sterilizing it, so never overcook.

Now, this one I have never tried, but know some people that do this: thoroughly soak soil and bake at 275F., until the surface begins to cake (about 1 hour). Or place the soil in a fine-mesh sieve and pour boiling water through it. When the water running through the soil gets very hot, the soil is sterile.

Sterilizing soil is not always necessary, but I do like to sterilize soil that has been infested with spider mites as a precaution to ensure that the spider mites don't spread to my other plants (especially house plants).

Dating After a Divorce - Starting New

Dating After a Divorce - Starting New

Jump Starter

Are you considering dating after divorce? Has it been only a few months since your divorce has been finalized, but you want to go and put yourself out there and date again? Or have you been told how important it is to date after divorce, but you're not sure you're ready to meet someone new?

Not every woman is prepared to date after a divorce after the same length of time. Some will jump back into the dating scene in a heartbeat, but many feel a need to spend some time alone first. Read on to see when you should begin to date after a divorce and how to get back on that dating horse.

Rediscover the Woman

For some women, marriage simply swallows them up and they disappear with the relationship. They lose all sense of who they are and, over time, come to take on the role that is expected of them as a wife, forgetting completely who they once were. Before you decide to put yourself back out there again, take some time to discover who you really are. You may be surprised by what you find.

What have you set aside these past years in order to be with your husband? What sacrifices have you made? This is the time to catch up with the woman you left behind.

Grieving Process

Few are the women who leave divorce court sincerely celebrating their newfound freedom. For most of us, this is a difficult and heartbreaking process. Not only have we lost the man we loved, but it's the death of that marital dream that also pains us.

Many of us have dozens of plans for our future together with our husband and to have that all destroyed can be hard to swallow.

Take the time to mourn the loss of your love and your dream.

Dating After a Divorce

It's often tempting to talk about our divorce when we start dating someone new. The topic of past relationships is brought up and before you know it, you're going on and on about how badly your ex treated you, or, worse still, you're going on and on about how much you miss him and still love him.

Whatever anger, pain or angst you need to get off your chest about your ex-husband, do it with your friends. Spend a nice long evening venting and saying everything you feel and think about this broken relationship. Then you can meet this new guy with something else to talk about.

Eager Beaver

If you've become accustomed to living with a man and you feel the need to re-enter a relationship quickly, you might be setting yourself up for another failed romance. Not only are you apt to fall for the first guy who is remotely husband material, but you'll be going out on the dating scene with a distinguishable air of desperation.

Take the time meet the man who'll truly make you happy instead of settling for someone who'll simply replace your ex. You'll be happier in the end and dating after divorce will be a success instead of another failure.

Starting a Home Bakery

Starting a Home Bakery

Jump Starter

When starting a home bakery you need to bear in mind, first of all, that baking bread, cake, pie or cookies for a special occasion can be great fun. But to make money in a home baking business you have to bake your specialty many times a week, over and over again. In other words, you must first come to grips with the fact that "commercial" baking is work, good and lucrative work, but quite different from once-in-a-while party baking.

Starting a home bakery business is relatively easy. Let's say your specialty is a delicious, rich cheesecake. The first step, before soliciting one order, is to figure out exactly how much one cake costs you. This means calculating every ingredient, including the fraction of a pound of butter you use to grease your cake pan and the cost of power to bake your cake. Breaking costs down to the price per egg and the price per cup of flour is more complicated than it seems at first. And once you've figured the exact cost of all the ingredients you'll probably be surprised to find out how expensive your cake has been, not counting your labor. Now take the cost you've arrived at and double it. That will be your selling price. Don't be shocked to discover that your selling price for one cheesecake could be as high as or more, and don't be discouraged. People expect to pay more for homemade baked goods because there is just no commercial product that can compare.

Your objective in selling your baked goods is to line up as many regular customers as possible. This means your primary effort should be directed to local restaurants, delicatessens and small groceries. The idea here is to line up customers who will take a weekly quantity of your product, as opposed to individuals who buy one cake at a time for a special occasion. Once you've established your "institutional" buyers then there will be time to think about advertising for direct sales to consumers.

Visit restaurants and stores with your samples in hand. You will get more attention from the owner of the establishment if you visit during the quieter hours of the day (not at mealtime). Offer to leave one of your products as a test. If your cake is as good as you've been told by family and friends you should get a large order when you call back in a few days. Once your baked product has become a regular feature in several outlets, the biggest problem you'll probably be facing is how to keep up with the demand.

At some point you will have to come to a decision about how large you want your business to be. The danger, of course, is the loss of home-baked quality. Don't be tempted to "cheat" on the ingredients, even slightly, because discerning customers will catch on soon enough.

With a modest start in your own kitchen, using the cost structure outlined above, you should be able to earn 0 a week or more after paying for ingredients. When you get to the point of adding commercial ovens and a staff of helpers your income could jump to 0 a week or more.

A final suggestion: Stick to baked goods you know are proven winners. If your specialty is a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate layer cake, don't assume that anything you turn out of your oven will be an automatic best seller. Venture into related baked goods cautiously and only after careful taste-testing.
